I´MGRAND IN KÖLN PORZ FINKENBERG
Some places are identified with their high rate of migration. Therefore, large parts of a district and its inhabitants often have a negative conno- tation. Usually, media responds to that very quickly and aggravates the situation through overdramatized headlines. The once conferred image of a »social hotspot« sets off and is then dif cult to overcome – both for the district ́s residents and for people from outside.
This project deals with the district Köln-Porz-Finkenberg which has to grapple with »ghetto« reputation
The former »Demonstrativbauvorhaben«, a utopian idea of large »living machines« in narrow spaces, have turned out to be a run-down housing estate and are home for min. 6,500 people with migration backgrounds and for low-income families.
»I’mgrand« wants to battle the negative image by using the same media communication tools, but, instead, tries to look behind the intimidating facades. A detailed analysis of the area and its inhabitants resulted in intercultural city. An important component of the project is the produc- tion of a documentary lm dealing with the district Köln-Porz-Finken- berg an its inhabitants – people from around the world have found their new home there, »I’MGRAND in Köln Porz Finkenberg«
Every day, they encounter prejudices against them due to the district in which they reside. The project now shows that the protagonists not only con dently identify with their own private space in which they live, their dreams and visions.
A major exhibition in this domain now illustrates topics, stories and daily matters of the inhabitants of Köln-Porz-Finkenberg. It was pro- duced by the protagonists and other residents of this district. A photo series, which arose during the project and the installation »Boxes of Finkenberg«, as well as a lm premiere are also an important part of the exhibition program.
The people, their achievements, and not the facades are centered here, and space for interculturalism, tolerance and communication evolves. Accompanying the project, a website (www.imgrand.de) was created which documented the progress and results of the project and which helps to promote a new perspective on the district.
»I’MGRAND« ist der Titel meines Projektes bei dem Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund dabei unterstützt werden sollen, ihre Potenziale endlich zu zeigen. Im Rahmen meiner Bachelorarbeit habe ich mich mit der Großwohnsiedlung Köln- Porz- Finkenberg und deren Bewohnern auseinandergesetzt. Es handelt sich hier um einen besonders internationalen Stadtteil Kölns, dessen Bild durch die heruntergekommenen Fassaden der Hochhäuser geprägt und immer wieder in den Medien mit negativen Assoziationen in Verbindung gebracht wird. Das einmal verliehene Image des »sozialen Brennpunktes« setzt sich fest und ist dann schwierig wieder zu überwinden, sowohl für die Bewohner als auch für die Außenstehenden.
Um dem negativen Ruf entgegenzusteuern entstand der dokumentarische Kurz lm »I’MGRAND in Köln Porz Finkenberg«.
Die Protagonisten des Kurzfilms sind unterschiedliche Menschen mit Migrationshintergründen, Bewohner des Stadtteils, von jung bis alt, die ihre persönlichen Interessen und Träume verfolgen. In enger Zusammenarbeit mit den Protagonisten entstand ein Kurzfilm in dem die Bewohner offen über ihre persönlichen Erfahrungen erzählen und ihre Stärken aufzeigen. Die Multikulturalität wird hier als Qualität aufgegriffen, ohne die Schwierigkeiten mit denen die Menschen konfrontiert sind »verharmlosen« zu wollen.
Der Kurz lm »I’MGRAND in Köln Porz Finkenberg« schaut hinter die Fassaden des Stadtteils und fördert durch die Stärkung des Selbstbewusstseins der Bewohner den Weg in die Integration.
Der Fremde, der Einwanderer, der Flüchtling wird oft mit negativen Eigenschaften assoziiert, das was man nicht kennt, löst Ängste und Misstrauen aus. Der Kurz lm »I’MGRAND in Köln Porz Finkenberg« baut Brücken auf zu mehr Kommunikation und Toleranz.
